New York Public Library, New York

The New York Public Library Main Branch or the Stephen A.Schwarzman Building has its main entrance on Fifth Avenue. Opened to the public on 23rd May 1911 it is constructed in the Beaux-Arts style and has a marble facade with the main entrance flanked by two lions.

Stephen A.Schwarzmann had the library renamed after him due to a $100 million donation for its restoration which took place from 2007 to 2011.

The two lion sculptures are made of Tennessee marble and the legend states they are there so patrons could read “between the lions”- the lions are nicknamed “Patience” and “Fortitude”.

If you visit be sure to stroll through neighbouring Bryant Park where you’ll find a mix of tourists and local residents - some of which you’ll find playing chess and table tennis.
