The. Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge spanning the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
It was opened on 24th May 1883 and at the time, was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Spanning 1595.5 ft it was originally called the New York & Brooklyn Bridge but was renamed in 1915. It carries vehicles (five lanes) and pedestrians and used to carry a train line. It is neighbour to the Manhattan Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge providing the B to the BMW of the three.
Across the bridge we found ourselves in DUMBO or Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass to give it the full name. The area used to be known as Gairville and was originally a ferry landing. My advice for tourists like me is get there very early. When we arrived it was busy and if you want clear photos there are a lot less people after sunrise. Try and get to the Timeout Market in the evening for a great selection of food and views of the bridges in the dark.
