Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church on Maiden Lane is an early English Gothic style Grade II listed church designed by F.H.Pownall (1831-1907) - it was “specifically devoted to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament”.
The church cost £6,000 and the foundation stone was laid in 1873 with the internal floor level three feet below the pavement to avoid the building being too tall. It was opened in 1874 by Cardinal Henry Manning who was the Archbishop of Westminster. The church features in Graham Greene’s novel “The End of the Affair”.
The church underwent renovation and was reopened in 2018 by Cardinal Vincent Nichols who dedicated the new Diocesan Shrine to the Blessed Sacrament.
On the wall of the church you’ll find a monument to Carlo Acutis. Carlo was a London born Italian boy who created a website which catalogued each reported Eucharistic miracle in the world. He unfortunately developed leukaemia and passed away at age fifteen in 2006. Carlo was beatified on 10th October 2020 by Pope Francis.
Visiting in poor light on a busy December evening wasn’t the best way to get photos but hopefully these given some idea of the interior.
